Mostly everyone knows who the little mermaid is. Thanks to Disney, the little mermaid has been canonized and is a common household item. However, there is another story. In the original Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, the little mermaid chooses death over her own life. (T_T)

There have been many renditions of both animated and live action films (I found a nifty Russian version).

Personally I grew up having watched the Japanese animated version, which I adore. Though oddly enough Marina (the little mermaid) is blond haired and blue eyed.

During one part of the anime, Marina starts busting into song, one in particular, her "coming of age song" I find cheesy yet entrancing. Lyrics below, my comments in red.

"
When a mermaid comes of age she begins a different kind of life (you start laying eggs everywhere)

Childish games are left far behind, she prepares to be a bride (that's all you did back then)

Her schooldays are in the past now, her heart becomes her new guide (books underwater?)

It will portal the way to love eternal

Wisdom only comes with time
The road to love is paved with broken hearts (it's pure carnage, don't do it)

If I am to reach my goal, I must stake everything
In my true destiny, no matter what the price (is it possible to rent?)

Far away I hear the call of the heart that sings a song like mine (you should stop doing drugs)

It's melody draws near and suddenly we're in perfect harmony (or you're tone deaf)

I know it beckons to me from the land that's not from the sea (yeah, stop with the drugs)

Yet I know I must follow wherever it leads me (way to be a sheep)
Doing a little research on fairy tales I found that most fairy tales (at least the happy ones) end with "and they lived happily ever after". However there was one ending rendition that caught my eye, probably a relic of Grimm's as they were very cruel, yet realistic in their vision of humanity, i.e. death.
This is an ink sketch colored in Photoshop of a friend of mine. He grows lavender and carries it in his pocket when he travels.

Herb trivia:
Lavender has been known to be a symbol of cleanliness, devotion, and purity. Perhaps this interpretation is due to the fact that lavender oil has been shown to have antibacterial/fungal/viral qualities. Also lavender has a sedative effect; so it may be a useful item to carry in ones pocket (aromatherapy to go)
Lately I've been reflecting on my physical transformation into an adult woman. It's as if overnight I possessed this adult body with adult worries. Close my eyes for a second and I can zip back to a rainy day when I was 4 or 5, painting the dark gray sky without a care in the world.
In the past, as soon as I started dating someone I would automatically note three things:

1. See if I was compatible with their astrological sign and zodiac sign
2. See if my first name sounded cool with their last name.
3. See if they smelled nice.

Number 3 is actually very important and should be at the top of the list. This has been proven through countless of studies, which from my own experiences I would have to concur. >_<
A continuation of the tea & coffee series. A bit random, but hopefully with some time I can develop more in depth comic bits about the vast subject matter.

I am a big fan of a shojo manga called "Glass Mask". I really like the style that Suzue Miuchi illustrates her stories. Perhaps her style is a little old-fashioned, but I really like how she is able to capture the spirit of pure clean fun.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9179497909878074267.post-76045662873851019532012-01-07T23:07:00.000-08:002012-01-08T13:21:29.710-08:00Tea, Coffee, Or . . .

Tea, coffee, or? A teaser for a tea-cup sized animation. Lately I have been drinking too much coffee. I think I am going to start a weekly "slice of life" or S.O.L. comic. In terms of comics or manga, S.O.L is a genre that highlights the mundane everyday experience, i.e. taking out the garbage. There is something very human about documenting our menial existences. It's food for thought and what better way to reflect than by drawing it in comic form.
Above is a little comic about a chronic problem of mine. I am not a neck specialist, most of the info was gleaned from this site. I think I'm going to have to start duct taping my head to my bed.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9179497909878074267.post-62249276192328896492012-01-05T23:40:00.001-08:002012-01-08T13:22:05.775-08:00Vampire Hunter D-Licious

I recently watched the cult classic anime movie Vampire Hunter D (1985). "Dark, fiction sci-fi romance"; there is something fatalistically wonderful about the leading ladies in this anime.

Why is this a cult classic? The opening scene says it all. The heroine is hunting velicoraptors in a miniskirt with a machine gun.
